Topcats Racing are excited to confirm that Top Gear’s Original Stig, Perry McCarthy, will be joining us for our Grand Opening on Saturday, 28th June from Midday until 5pm. Perry was the television series’ very own Stig for the first two years and he is no stranger to TVR either having driven them on the Top Gear test track for the timed lap leader board.
His repertoire of antics on track include driving everything from a Clio Sport to Aston Martin to Koenigsegg and Pagani Zonda, occasionally putting his life in his own hands to get the job done.
Perry has had an illustrious career in motor racing without his pseudonym. Having decided in his teens that he was going to be a racing driver, he fought his way through the ranks of single seater racing with an equally single minded determination to make it into Formula 1 with little or no financial backing, and he succeeded, albeit with Andrea Moda, a team that was destined to fail, before he continued as test driver for Benetton and Williams.
There has never been any doubt about his driving talent and Perry was subsequently chosen to compete in the World GT Championship, Sebring 12 hours and Le Mans for the works Lotus, Viper, Panoz before his reputation earned him a seat with both the Audi Germany and Audi UK teams. Only a shoulder injury in 2004 curtailed what would otherwise have been a much longer career as a professional driver at the very top of motor racing.
Perry has a keen sense of humour too. He used to write comedy sketches before he became a racing driver and he now as a professional speaker and ambassador for numerous global brands, he marries his charming wit with anecdotes of past driving and racing exploits. He is also a respected authority for road safety and advanced driving.
Perry will take the stage at our Grand Opening to engage and amuse the crowd and will also be judging one or more of our competitions on the day. Please feel free to chat with him, show him your car and share your past driving exploits with him too!
Competition winners will also receive a copy of his very funny but earnest autobiography ‘Flat Out, Flat Broke’.
We look forward to seeing you there!
