NEW DRIVER ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE 2018 GT CUP

Posted by | Posted in Latest News, Main, Racing News | Posted on 13-04-2018

IMG_1232Topcats Racing are delighted to announce that they will be running an exciting new driver and car line up for the 2018 GT Cup.

2017 GT Cup GTA Class co-contenders Mick Mercer and Gary Smith are rejoining the team with their Ginetta G55. However, Mercer will be joining in a managerial capacity and has handed his seat to a deserving young driver, 21 year old James Reveler.

Having successfully learnt his craft in kart championships in his junior years earning several championship titles, focus on his racing career soon moved to F4 but inexperience from both the team and driver made it a difficult transition despite regularly fighting within the top 10. When the series was upscaled to the British F3 Championship the bigger budget meant Reveler couldn’t follow suit.

IMG_1237Reveler made his debut in GT Cup at the last 2 meetings in 2017 where he secured two second places at Donington after being out of racing for 2 years and with no testing! … then 3rd, but due to a track limits infringement and a technicality with the safety car he lost that place, having made up the penalty difference. That was followed by 4th places at Snetterton.

The team hope that this opportunity will give Reveler the foothold he needs having realised his aspirations lay within the GT racing scene.

Reveler will be supported by main sponsor JG Wealth along with Clearview Mortgage Services, Duncan Phillips and The Lawson Practice.

The Ginetta G55 has been rebuilt over the Winter by Topcats Racing and is in the stages of fine tuning and the addition of sponsorship livery ready for testing next Friday before the race. The team have one of the longest GT Endurance racing credentials in the UK. Last year, together with owner driver Neil Huggins in his Lamborghini Gallardo they won the GT Cup GTB Championship and 3rd with their Marcos Mantis GT car which will also be competing again this year.

As always the team will provide all the skill, resources and knowledge to capitalise on such a strong, young and exciting driver line up. We hope that we can give James Reveler and Gary Smith every chance to win the championship this year.

The first round of the GT Cup is on 21st/22nd April at Donington Park.

‘Tekkers’ from Topcats racer Gilbert in GT Cup Oulton Park

Posted by | Posted in Latest News, Racing News | Posted on 23-08-2016

GTCup_OultonPark-24861For motorsport enthusiasts and followers of our own racing exploits we can highly recommend viewing Motors TV’s coverage of the GT Cup race at Oulton Park in July. See the link below. Lamborghini Gallardo drivers, Neil Huggins and Jeff Wyatt were joined by Warren Gilbert in the teams Marcos Mantis GT car for the mid-season round.
Notwithstanding the catastrophic start for the lead Huracan and Ferrari cars that crashed at the first corner, claiming a handful of pursuing racers that couldn’t avoid the melee and debris and subsequent cancellation of race 1 for GT Cup, an enthralling race was enjoyed by drivers and spectators in the second race with much of that credited to Topcats race team Director Warren Gilbert.
He was locked in battle with the Bailey/Shultz Ferrari 458 almost from the start until Gilbert was able to force the Ferrari to run wide at Deer Leap and pass down the inside as the pitstop window was opening.
Effort exerted by the driver is translated through the car and it’s rather ‘on the edge’ stance.
Gilbert finished an incredible 5th overall, punching above his weight as usual against the modern machinery around him.  Both Gilbert and the Huggins/Wyatt duo in the Lamborghini came 2nd in their respective classes.
Our next round of GT Cup will be at Silverstone GP Circuit on 10/11th September. We welcome supporters of the team so if you would like tickets to come and watch the racing and wave the metaphorical Topcats flag, then be our guest!!
Please contact Charlotte Gilbert by email at charlotte@topcatsracing.com.

Jeff Wyatt joins Huggins in Gallardo for Silverstone GT Cup this weekend

Preparing for the weekend

Preparing for the weekend

We are pleased to confirm that 2014 GT Cup Champion, Jeff Wyatt, will be co-driving with Neil Huggins at Silverstone this weekend for the GT Cup. It will be the first time Wyatt steps into a Lamborghini Gallardo but hopes to get some miles under his belt in pre race testing on Friday. It’s not the first time Wyatt has raced with the team. He has had several successful outings with the team in their TVR Tuscan and Marcos Mantis GT cars. The refinement of the 4WD Gallardo will take some getting used in contrast to the rawness of the British marques. He did however, win the championship in a BMW GT car and was on great form at the last round of GT Cup in a Porsche GT3 Cup car.

Two sprint races on Saturday and a 50 minute ‘pitstop’ race on Sunday we hope will provide the duo with an opportunity to win the spoils for the weekend.

Regular race updates will be available on our Facebook page: Topcatsracing

Topcats Racing are pleased to announce that their team driver Steve Glynn won the Britcar Trophy Championship at the final race of the season at Thruxton on Saturday in the TVR Sagaris.

Topcats Racing took over the running and preparation of the car before the start of this season with an overhaul and converting from LS3 to LS7 power ready to mount a serious challenge for the championship.

At the last race of the season , Glynn was on top form despite impending operations on damaged shoulder muscles! Wrestling a car with 500+hp and no power steering around Britain’s fastest and bumpiest circuit singled him out as this year’s deserving champion.

Glynn finished 5th overall in race one after suffering a tyre blow at 150mph putting paid to his chances of a win but an outright win in race two only served to prove his status.

Glynn will have revelled too in the fact that he beat his two Topcats Racing team owners Charlotte and Warren Gilbert sharing a car each with Jon Harrison and Rob Wilson respectively in their sister Marcos Mantis GT cars in the same class.

Duo, Gilbert and Harrison (car 54) failed to finish race one with a broken output shaft before Gilbert could to take over from Harrison.

Gilbert and Wilson in the sister car (60) were on point and finished second overall to the Class 1 Riley Daytona Prototype.

With Charlotte Gilbert starting race 2 from the back of the grid following race 1’s DNF, she made a great start managing to make her way back up to 3rd overall in time to hand over to Jon Harrison who maintained position to the chequered flag.

Warren Gilbert started from P2 on the grid behind the Riley, determined to pass the Riley for leading glory, maintained the lead for a lap and a half only to half spin at Noble, lose 3 places, regather and repass to catch back up with the Riley.

The Riley soon retired and Gilbert found himself leading the race as he pitted to hand over to Wilson. Wilson’s run didn’t last long as he too suffered a puncture dropping them down the board to finish 4th overall.

Topcats narrowly miss out on wins in first Lamborghini Super Trofeo Race

Posted by | Posted in Latest News, Racing News | Posted on 25-05-2015

Lambo line upTopcats Racing and driver Neil Huggins narrowly missed out on a double win this weekend after Saturdays first race saw them make a fantastic climb up the leader board into P2 and chasing the lead car before the Lamborghini Super Trofeo cut out with just half a lap to the end of the race.

With two separate qualifying sessions for both races, Huggins really clicked with his new car in 2nd qualifying to secure P2 on the grid for race two.

After a less than perfect getaway from the green light in Sundays 50 minute Lamborghini Super Trofeo race and a cautious opening couple of laps because of unfamiliarity with cold tyres, Neil Huggins dropped to 5th in class with a big 100 metre gap to make up. As soon as Huggins was confident with the tyres he began to close in on the leading pack. Within 3 laps he had halved the gap and drizzle set in. Huggins really came alive whilst the competition started to fall back into… Neil’s clutches. Huggins managed to pass 3 of his Gallardo Lambo thru fencechallengers before his mandatory pitstop and by the time all the pitstops had played out Huggins was up into P2 and challenging for P1 and quickest on track. With 10 minutes remaining Huggins was making a concerted effort to overtake the class leader and made several attempts to get down the inside into the corners but the worsening wet weather conditions were making each attempt more precarious as all cars were still on slick tyres. A move into Copse to out brake his opponent cost him in the end and he spun into the gravel. It ended his chance of winning but was able to return to the track to finish the race. Despite the final result, Huggins has definitely been noticed and although this was to be a one off for the year with Blancpain, Huggins has unfinished business….

Topcats sister Marcos Mantis’s make it home together with podium finishes for the Silverstone 24hr!

Posted by | Posted in Latest News, Racing News | Posted on 29-04-2015

Two very battered Marcos's cross the line together

Two very battered Marcos’s cross the line together

Topcats Racing are equipped to deal with every eventuality for a 24hr race and it was just well. It was a test of the teams skills that while most teams would have packed up their tools, Topcats were rebuilding  crashed cars, engines and various components from the pit garage floor to get both cars to the finish line!

Right from the beginning, both Topcats Marcos Mantis cars were cursed with a swathe of punctures (5 in total) in the opening 2 hours of the race whilst all the other cars inexplicably got away scott free! This put both cars on the back foot with much work to try and regain their 7th and 8th place starting positions whilst still harbouring aspirations to finish in the top 3 overall.

Both cars had had diff rebuilds in preparation for the race but sometimes things are best left alone as a newly replaced bearing failed for car 17 driven by Joachim Bolting, Nigel Pike, Paul Black and Pat Gormley.

The team were well prepared though and a fresh diff was ready and waiting to be installed whilst the outgoing one was rebuilt straight away just in case! The lengthy stop dropped the team to the bottom of the leader board and would take several hours and into the night before they would start making significant ascent past the opposition.

Meanwhile, drivers of sister car No.15, Paul Stephens, Gerry Taylor, Owen O’Neill and Neil Huggins were very much in the mix and about to take class lead and back up to 9th overall. Taylor was at the helm to enjoy the mornings first daylight hours. Having caught the Speedworks Aston Martin, he passed on the inside before the pit entry whilst the Aston was wide on the outside. The Aston Martin cut sharply across the track to make the pit entrance but hit Taylor hard shunting him nose first into the pit wall.

The whole front end of the car incl. suspension was destroyed as was the top end of the engine and it took 4 hours and 30 minutes to rebuild. This was a quicker option than installing a whole new engine that was sitting in a box at the back of the garage.  There was no question at all that the team would ensure both cars would cross the finish line and clinging on to the hope that there was still a chance of a class podium was enough motivation.

By now, Car 17 had moved into P2 in class behind the new V8 Marc Cars Australia.

A waiting game was all that was required for Car 15 in the end to steal P3 from the Marc Cars sister car which was taken out by its own stable mate on Sunday morning and had to retire. As that car gradually trickled down the leaderboard, Car 15 leapfrogged to take P3 in class on the last lap!

A fitting end to the race for the team was a formation finish for the sister Marcos cars as they crossed the finish line.

Team and drivers were delighted to have all 8 of its drivers on the podium to receive their trophies.
